Our Story
Pioneer Nursing Home Health District is also referred to as Pioneer Place. The original building was started in the 40’s as a hospital, but the money ran out and the building sat empty. After several years, the building was finished and opened as the Malheur Nursing Home under the county. By the early 70’s the nursing home was doing so well on its own they created a health district and went off county support. Along with the new health district came a new name, Pioneer Nursing Home Health District. Over the years we have had several remodels and additions to the building, but it remained an old building with a lot of problems. By the late 90’s the up-and-coming thing was assisted living facilities, and we felt this was the way to go. So, we went to the voters and asked for a bond to update and build a new 33-bed nursing home and a 31-bed assisted living. The bond was passed, and construction began in 2001. The nursing home was completed in late summer of 2003. Part of the old nursing home with all its history and memories was torn down and the assisted living facility was built. The assisted living was completed and opened its doors April 2004. In 2010 the nursing facility became certified as a skilled nursing facility with Medicare and in 2013 became certified with the Veteran’s Administration.
Pioneer Place has been a home to so many, those who homesteaded here, those who built and started this town; we have had mayors, doctors, nurses, businesspeople, husbands, and wives. We have had our teachers, our ministers, our aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. We have had several generations go through our doors, with many more to come. Our goals and mission statement hold true for all staff in both facilities.
